The Dodgers Are Serious This Year

It appears that the Los Angeles Dodgers are really serious about getting to the big dance, The World Series, this year http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080731&content_id=3230634&vkey=news_la&fext=.jsp&c_id=la&partnerId=rss_la with the biggest in-season trade in Los Angeles Dodger history.

My beloved Bums landed Boston Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez in a three-way trade that included the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates get from the Dodgers third baseman Andy LaRoche, and top pitching prospect Bryan Morris. The Red Sox get Jason Bay from the Pirates.

The best part of the deal is that the Red Sox, so desperate to unload the unhappy Ramirez, will pay the remainder of his $7,000,000 annual salary. And, because Ramirez is a free agent at the end of the season, he may very well be a short-timer in a Dodger uniform.

So, in not costing the Dodgers but two prospects, they have one of the best hitters in the game today. Ramirez is still playing well at 36 years old. Ramirez has 20 homers and 68 RBI's and a .299 batting average.

This trade along with the acquisition of third baseman Casey Blake from the Cleveland Indians shows that Dodger GM Ned Coletti is serious about bringing it home this year, the twentieth anniversary of the last World's Championship in Los Angeles. Not to be outdone, the Anaheim Angels* were not to be outdone in acquiring Mark Texiera from the Atlanta Braves.

These two teams, the Dodgers and the Angels are serious and looking at a possibility of finally bringing a Freeway Series to the people of Southern California.

Now, that would be one for the books!

*The Angels are NEVER, EVER to be referred to as the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" on this blog. They will be referred to as the Anaheim Angels!

If Ramirez leaves at the end of the season, the Dodgers will also get complimentary picks in the draft. It was picks like that that helped the Red Sox get guys like Jonathon Papelbon.

I usually find myself rooting for teams in LA, especially if the NY Yankees and Redsox are in the playoffs. And we love to see a team that hasn't been there in a while get in.

This trade was also a good deal for the Sox, who get rid of an aging whiner for prospects. Who knows what the Pirates are thinking.

I was hoping my Tigers would make a deal like this for a pitcher, but they must have decided they had already depleted the minor leagues enough in getting Cabrerra and the dud D. Willis.

Yes, but the Tigers dumped Pudge Rodriguez. Do not understand the logic of that trade. I think that if Ramirez cathces on with the fans here, we will find a way to keep him. Big trade for all the teams involved. Amazingly, it helps all three teams.
