The Devil Went Down To Georgia

Do you remember the ol' Charlie Daniels song, "The Devil Went Down To Georgia"? Well, it was in reference to the southern American state of Georgia.
Another variation of this is playing out on the other side of the world as Russian forces are all but invading the sovereign Republic of Georgia in a bold and vain attempt to have them heel at not the devil, but the Russian bear. In this case, it is one in the same.
The Russians may have already taken the town of Gori and maybe as little as 15 miles from the capital of Tbilisi

This is the ultimate power grab by "prime minister" Vladamir Putin in an attempt to strike fear in the former Soviet republics that broke with Moscow when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. But, it is also a naked attempt to gain unbridled access to an oil pipeline and to hold much of Europe a prisoner to its whims.
Europe depends a great deal on oil and gas from Russia. Georgia is a democracy and a threat to its goals of reuniting the old Soviet empire.
So, during the Summer Olympics no less, the Russians claim that they are simply defending the majority Russian population in the disputed region known as South Ossetia. No matter that Russian loyalist rebels provoked the government of President Mikheil Saakashvilli to fight back and assert control over the disputed region, which Georgia claims is its own territory.

As you can see in the above graphic, it is not exactly a fair fight. The Russians have 800 tanks in the region compared with the whole of the Georgian army's 125. There can be 90,000 Russian troops to the whole of the Georgian troop count of 18,000. An air war could be fought with few Russian planes as there are 380 to the whole of the Georgian air force of 9 combat aircraft.
You get the picture. It would be a matter of hours if the Russians wanted to take total control of the nation. And, that is more than likely the goal. They would replace President Saakashvilli with a puppet.
The real long term aspect of this is that once again, the West will be held hostage by another Big Oil nation that will want to set its terms on long-term oil and or gas prices.
While we in the United States fiddle while the Speaker Of The House, Democrat Nancy Pelosi is still trying to hawk her loser book. The Democrat presumptive presidential nominee, Sen. Messiah Barack will still argue that if we just do some car tire inflating and get our oil changed and the occasional tune up, we will be just fine. The Democrats seem to have a belief that we can alternate our way from the Big Oil nations.
Nothing is further from the truth.
While the Republican presumptive presidential nominee, Sen. John "F--- You" McCain has not come around on development of ANWR, he has called for lifting the ban on offshore oil drilling. And Sen. "F--- You" McCain wants to throw the kitchen sink, so to speak, at developing new oil reserves off shore, seeking alternative sources other than oil, as well as develop nuclear energy.
It is situations such as this that must make the average American voter who is thinking between the two candidates who would best handle a situation of naked aggression that the Russian bear has done to this peaceful, burgeoning democratic nation.
The Devil has gone down to Georgia, and now it is the world's turn to send that Devil back where it belongs.

It's a pity we can't do something substantial about it. I say we definitely need to cancel all NATO/Russia joint exercises and expel Russia from the the "G-8". Once this situation has calmed down, immediate membership in NATO for all the former Soviets might be in order.
