In the political earthquake of the new decade, Massachusett(e)s state Senator, Scott Brown (R) has defeated Democrat Attorney General Martha Coak, ah the hell with it, Croakley, 52% to 47% for the "people's seat" in the United States senate.
It appears that Sen-elect Brown's strength was in the Boston suburbs, the Eastern and central parts of Massachusett(e)s. Mrs. Croakley's strength was in Boston, Western and the trendy, college towns.
Surprisingly, Sen.-elect Brown eeked out his own hometown of Waltham, 50% to 49%. Mrs. Croakley won her hometown, Medford, 57% to 42%.
This map from The Boston Globe shows in great detail, town by town how Sen.-elect Brown scored this upset victory.
Some lessons to be learned are obvious.
Hey, Mrs. Croakley. You should have ran for this seat. This was not a mail-it-in campaign. You got punked by an upstart that should have never been this close in a state where only 12% of registered voters are registered Republicans. Think of that for one moment. Twelve percent, which translates to roughly about 421,000 registered voters. Now, Massachusett(e)s is a state in which the majority of voters are registered independent. But Democrats are 37% of the registered voters. Sen.-elect Brown tapped into something that has been brewing a long time, even in this bastion of liberalism.
When Mrs. Croakley decided, oh I actually need to campaign, she should have run a positive campaign. Sen.-elect Brown did. More voters said they voted for Sen.-elect Brown than against Mrs. Croakley. Don't dump on the very people you are asking to vote for you. Mrs. Croakley, you do not tell potential Roman Catholic voters that if they have a concientious objection to working in an emergency room or a situation in which an abortion may be performed to not work in that setting. Mrs. Croakley, don't mock the opponent for actually getting to meet his potential voters at sports venues. Sports fans do vote. Mrs. Croakley, do not use a Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King speech to compare yourself to Rev. Dr. King. And Beg for votes. Afterall, it was a non-partisan event.
Another lesson is that the Dear Leader, President Obama, is not a gimme for votes. Already he is 0 for 3 in the last three big elections. Ask John Corzine in New Jersey how well it all worked for him having the Dear Leader, President Obama, begging for votes in reliably Democrat New Jersey. Creigh Deeds loved the Dear Leader's visit in Virginia. Now, Mrs. Croakley. This new loss is only going to pull more of the veneer off the Dear Leader, President Obama, and make him less popular than he already is.
Most important, and this is for both parties, the people want the politicians to keep their paws out of their wallets and work on real issues, such as creating a climate that will produce jobs. No, not some pie-in-the-sky "green" jobs down the road. Real government getting out of the way so that the free market can get out there and produce the jobs and create an environment of real economic growth.
But please, look at these numbers. With 100% of the Massachusett(e)s precincts reporting:
State Sen. Scott Brown (R): 1,161,586 52%
Attorney General Martha Croakley(D): 1,055,409 47%
Joe Kennedy (L): 22,165 1%
And, here is the face of a winner, Sen.-elect Scott Brown:
Thank you, the good people of Massachusett(e)s for the beginning of a second American Revoulution!
